St Paul's History and This Island
Built in 1865, St. Paul's Episcopal Church is one of the oldest churches in Ohio. Still in its original wooden form, it is located just south of the downtown area of the village of Put-in- Bay, South Bass Island, Ohio. Just 5 miles south of the Canadian border and 10 miles Southeast of Pelee Island, Ontario, Canada, Put-in-Bay is a picturesque island full of history and nature. During the War of 1812, one of the greatest battles occurred just to our north between the British and the American soldiers. Who can forget the famous words "Don't Give Up the Ship"? The monument you see today is to honor the memory of Commodore Oliver Hazzad Perry and those sailors who were lost in one of the battles that gave us the freedom we celebrate today.
A New Priest for St. Paul's
Rev. Mary Staley, our new parish priest will arrive at St. Paul's in August, 2010. Mother Mary was raised in West Des Moines, Iowa. After graduating from Iowa State in 1977 with a BA in Recreation Management, was employed as a Girl Scout Field Executive staff member and Summer Camp Director until 1980. For the next 22 years she held a variety of leadership roles overseeing Satellite Systems for the Air Force, including space systems, budget, officer training and satellite surveillance. After retirement from the Air Force, she entered Virginia Theological seminary, completing a Masters of Divinity in the spring of 2005. Mother Mary served churches with a smaller average Sunday Attendance (ASA) during her seminary years because she felt called to smaller parish ministry. After graduation she served as assistant to the vicar at St. Patrick's Anglo-Vietnamese parish in Annadale Virgina (ASA 70) before being called to her current position as the Assistant Rector of Church of our Saviour ( ASA 275) in January 2008. She is anxious to be part of a thriving smaller parish as St. Paul's. Mother Mary says "I fell in love with the people of St. Paul's and Put in Bay as soon as I arrived on my first visit. This seems to be what the Celts would call a Coal Ait (a thin veil between heaven and earth is very close together)
